The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) launched a simplified step-by-step guide in Portuguese on how to search for patents on the Internet, with required information to find out details on any invention that may have already been the subject of interest to individuals or companies in Brazil or abroad.
There are several ways to make a search, it is up to you to choose. This guide is divided into three parts, shows how to do searches on three databases (click on the link on top of each database to access the tutorial and perform your search):
1) Search the BPTO´s Brazilian Patents – allows access to patent applications filed in Brazil, both by residents in the country as by non-residents.
2) Search in the Latipat – contains information about patents filed in Spain and Latin America, allowing research in Portuguese and Spanish.
3) Search in the Espacenet – has patents of more than 90 countries, including the biggest patent filings, as the United States, China, Japan, South Korea and Germany. Brazil is also included. This is the database of greater scope and the searches must be made, preferably in English.
Complementing the guide has been prepared an annex on the International Patent Classification (IPC). This classification is a very important tool in the patent search because it allows to delimit precisely the focus on technological area of interest, since keywords can lead to different results than what we are looking for.
