INPI Releases Economic Outlook for Brazil Between 2014 and 2024

Clients from 57 countries applied for patent protection with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) up to February 2025. The countries with the highest number of patent applications were:

  • USA – 28%
  • Brazil – 21%
  • China – 10%
  • Germany – 6%
  • Japan – 4%

For utility models, trademarks, industrial designs, and technology contracts, most applications were submitted by Brazilian representatives.

New Technical Report on Brazil’s IP Landscape (2014–2024)

INPI released the technical report titled “Economic Outlook of Industrial Property (IP) in Brazil – 2014–2024.” The report analyzes the economic factors influencing IP filings and decisions at INPI. A new version of the document will be released annually.

The report evaluated the dynamics of IP filings and decisions over four periods:

  1. 2014–2016 – Economic crisis
  2. 2017–2019 – Slow stabilization
  3. 2020–2021 – COVID-19 pandemic
  4. 2022–2024 – Economic recovery

Granting of IP Rights Until February 2025:

  • 2,144 patents granted
  • 26,583 trademarks registered
  • 863 industrial designs registered
  • 802 software programs registered
  • 158 technology contracts registered
  • 4 geographical indications granted (no integrated circuit topographies)

Compared to the same period in the previous year:

  • Trademark registrations fell (-18.2%)
  • Technology contract registrations dropped (-10.2%)
  • Patent grants increased (+7.0%)
  • Industrial design registrations increased (+290.5%)
  • Software registrations increased (+24.7%)

Patent Filings

Patent applications declined at an average rate of -1.8% per year. Despite overall stability, some sectors saw growth, including biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and information and communication technology (ICT).

Year-to-date patent filings as of February 2025:

  • 4,175 patent applications (+0.5%)
  • 73,632 trademark applications (+22.4%)
  • 1,152 industrial design applications (+15.7%)
  • 823 software applications (+31.1%)
  • 147 technology contract filings (+21.5%)
  • 3 geographical indication requests (compared to 4 in the same period of 2024)
  • No integrated circuit topography filings (compared to 1 in 2024)

Quarterly Data (December–February):

  • 6,755 patent applications-3.2% decline compared to the previous quarter
  • 106,462 trademark applications+3.9% increase from the previous quarter
  • 1,850 industrial design applications+7.0% increase
  • 1,440 software program filings-8.0% decrease
  • 256 technology contract filings-4.1% decrease
  • 4 geographical indication filings – (compared to 6 in the previous quarter)

Annual Growth Rates by Category:

  • Trademarks – Grew at an average rate of +10% per year – driven by the rise of e-commerce and the services sector.
  • Industrial Designs – Increased by +0.7% per year – linked to growth in fashion, furniture, and electronics.
  • Software Programs – Increased by +13% per year – fueled by accelerated digitalization and the rise of new technological solutions and digital platforms.
  • Geographical Indications – Strong growth due to their recognition as a competitive advantage and a way to preserve local culture and promote regional development.

Profile of IP Applicants:

  • 37% of the 794 patent applications came from individuals.
  • Among the 66,754 trademark applications, 48% were from MEI (Individual Microentrepreneurs), microenterprises, and small businesses.
  • Among the 854 industrial design applications, 37% came from individuals.
  • Among the 823 software applications, 33% were filed by educational and research institutions and the government.
  • Among the 127 technology contract filings, medium and large companies dominated.
