The European Union agency responsible for the trademark has accepted a request from Turkey for the registration of the term “Turkey”. – Turkey’s Aegean Sea – as a brand name. The EU’s decision is unacceptable to Greece, questioning what the Greek authorities did or did not prevent such a move.
The EU Intellectual Property Commission (EUIPO) granted the trademark to the Turkish Tourism Promotion and Development Agency in December 2021 and granted the trademark until July 2031.
The EUIPO has patented “Turkey” for tourism purposes and has undisputedly accepted Turkey’s request to indirectly adapt the Aegean Sea through advertising campaigns.
In a document posted to the European Union Trade Mark EUTM, the term has been accepted since December 15, 2021 and appears to expire on July 16, 2031.

According to the Turkish Tourism Board, “Turkey” is the “coast of happiness”. The promotional video states: Turkey’s Aegean region offers beautiful landscapes, dazzling coastlines, white beaches, pine forests and olive groves. “
